Tella Balls Dessert Bar, Castle Hill
Updated: Jun 25, 2018
“Did I order that?” was my question as the waitress put a dessert the size of my head in front of me. Looking down at my meal - a hot mess of chocolate, donut, Nutella, cream, strawberries, banana and chocolate - I’ll be honest, I felt a little apprehensive.
I mean, I’m a responsible 44 year old mother. What the hell was I doing dining out on dessert for Friday lunch?
But Tella Balls Dessert Bar has just joined the throng of interesting eateries installed in Castle Towers to the delight of locals who fall into the category of requiring food for sustenance and pleasure.
It is the brainchild of Aki Daikos and Simon Kappatos, who were inspired to cater for the sweet-toothed with donut shaped gelato, Nutella filled donuts atop a Nutella milkshake (yes really), waffles, crepes and much more.
If you are the type of person whose guilty pleasure is to slip into something with an elasticised waist and attack the Nutella jar with a spoon until you’re done and forced to conceal it in the bin before anyone notices it’s empty, this is the place for you. Ditto if you believe that Fruit Loops are a perfectly acceptable choice of evening meal. Feel free to come right out and own your cravings for all things sweet at Tella Balls Dessert Bar . You’ll be in good company. Of course, the place was teeming with teens and early twenties-types, but there were also a lot of other patrons that frankly, should know better. #iwilljudge
Oh, and get this: they do kids’ parties. Can you imagine what maniac behaviour a do for tots catered with this sugary gear is going to produce? Good luck with that one!
The whole thing is flat out Willy Wonka level fantasy. From the Tella Fish and Chips (Panko crumbed shallow fried ice cream and donut chips) to the Pastatella (Fettucine style crepes) to the Signature Tella Lasagne (Nutella and Golden Gaytime options available), it’s out of control people.
On one hand, there is a part of me can’t help wonder whether it’s the type of thing people will go (hazel)nuts over for a spell before it goes the way of Sizzler and Granny Mays.
Then again, this isn’t their first rodeo. The brand’s been off to the races since 2015 with successful outlets in Concord, Liverpool, Dulwich Hill, Maitland, Ryde and Shellharbour.
Not only that, Tella Balls has cosied in next to Event Cinemas. Did someone say ‘teen dream’? Well, they certainly did in my house when I brought these little beauties home, where unceremonious scoff down by my teens and tween ensued.
Oh, and by the way, my hot mess dessert the size of my head was beyond delicious.
