Within minutes of walking into Italian-eatery-meets-deli, Sirculo you’ll feel at home.
Chef and co-owner, Josh Sama is a big, friendly presence who – on the day I was there - took the time to welcome each patron into his new establishment. His enthusiasm is contagious – and if I’m going to come into contact with anything contagious, enthusiasm would be my number one pick. After extreme wealth.
The menu is filled with Italian and Mediterranean dishes that are both traditional and modernised. The deli features a growing retail range of Italian goodies such as pastas, olive oil, biscuits, sweets, meats, cold-pressed juices, pickled vegetables and coffee.
Located in Dural (where Cod’s Gift used to be), Sirculo is a buzzing little space filled with light and life. Although the place had only been open for nine weeks at the time of writing, you automatically get a sense that this is a food destination captained by people that know what they’re doing.
And that’s because they do, Josh (you may recognise him from MKR) has hospitality coursing through his veins. His family owns a long-established, much loved Italian restaurant in Leichhardt. He’s done a lot of catering and had a food truck on Windsor Road – and, in what is best labeled as a dream team, Josh has partnered with French-trained, hatted chef Avik Kanjilal to bring the world Sirculo.
The two are now locals and intend on establishing a casual, vibrant eating and meeting place for the community. They support the community by sourcing local produce and have future plans to run cooking classes to pass on their love and mastery of their special style of cuisine.
Judging by the upbeat vibe and steady stream of diners, who also all seem to leave buying items from the deli on their way out, they’re on to a winner.
And what can I say? Pardon my crudely rudimental Italian but every last bite was bellisimmo and delizioso.
Burrata (from the small pates menu) with house aged prosciutto and grilled peach that you can pair with a mental list of all the people you could impress if you took home some deli meat and prepared at home ... or better yet, just bring them to Sirculo....
From the specials menu ... Soft shell crab burger with avocado with a side of fries and chilli mayo.
Fish of the day (barramundi no less) with honey-cumin dutch carrot, fennel, pomegranate and herb salad.
Sirculo sells and serves the most refreshing array of cold-pressed juices, which can only be described as Drink Them. - I tried the Pink Party Ibiza Style (watermelon, strawberries, mint and coconut water).
Plus, they make a mean coffee.
... And are licensed.
