Bavarian Bier Café, Castle Hill
So, the hog has been given the heave ho and the Germans have moved into the piazza.
That’s right, the Bavarian Bier Cafe has made its way to Castle Hill and it is flamin’ wunderbar! Located in the totally refurbed space that used to house the Hog’s Breath, the thing that stays with me about the Castle Hill Bavarian is the light. The place is filled with gorgeous natural light that plays to the strengths of the smart, sassy décor. In short, this is a great place to hang.
I was there for Sunday lunch on my husband’s birthday and it was a perfect family-friendly choice (especially as kids under 12 eat free on Sundays. Tick! Tick!)
Personally, Bavarian food doesn’t exactly wow the lederhosen off me, but it was hearty and tasty, so there were no cuisine complaints from our table of six.
We started off by sharing a Giant Haus Made Prezel. Totally delicious but a tad exxy at ten bucks a pop, just quietly.
Our tribe's order ran the gamut of the menu – schnitzel and chips, a couple of crispy pork knuckles, a gourmet sausage meal, a salad wrap and pork buns that my son demolished in a heartbeat and that I am definitely ordering next time I’m there.
If you have any issue with arm strength, you’ll do well to avoid the drinks menu. Even a lemon lime and bitters comes in a stein the size of a small car. Of course, they also do imported beer (or bier) like nobody’s business – with 17 on tap including Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Hofbräu.
They also do Happy Hour every day with $5 beers, wines and basic spirits between 4-6pm, and if late night shopping has left you parched, pop on in for 2-for-1 cocktails on Thursdays.
Fun fact: you can also elect to drink your beer or cider from a Tube.
Or a boot.
Exactly why you would want to consume alcoholic beverages from footwear is beyond me. Hang on, while I ask Daniel Ricciardo …
Despite the increasing number of restaurants currently vying for hungry eyes at the Towers piazza, the Bavarian Bier Cafe should do well. Sehr gut!
